Alphabet Soup: Taking Photots of the Alphabet

After a comment on my post asking If I was going to do Alphabet soup again this year. I thought I would bring together all the previous posts so you can remind yourself of what we achieved last year.

I think maybe I will try and do it again in March. I will let you know when I have finalised some plans. Please do browse through the old posts, and remind yourself how incredible some of the photos were.

Top 3 TV Series Boxsets

I have found a new distraction! Boxsets. I have found a couple of series that I reccomend to help distract you!!!

House

I have watched every episode of House M.D. It is about Dr House (Hugh Laurie) who is insanely clever and can save just about anyone from dying, so long as it interests him. He is a diagnostic practioner and is obnoxious, rude sarcastic, but brilliant.

His long suffering team help him solve peoples medical mysteries and it all makes for one of the best wastes of time available. I reccomend you preorder series 1-5 now. With about 24 episodes a series, this will keep you ntertained for weeks.

House - Season 1-5 [DVD]

Monk

Adrian Monk was a brilliant detective for the San Francisco Police Department until his wife, Trudy, was killed by a car bomb in a parking garage, which Monk believed was intended for him. Trudy's death led Monk to suffer a nervous breakdown and he was discharged from the force, becoming a recluse, refusing to leave his house for over three years. He was finally able to leave the house with the help of his nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram). The breakthrough allowed him to work as a private detective and a consultant for the homicide unit despite retaining limitations rooted in his obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), which had grown significantly worse after the tragedy.

Monk's compulsive habits are numerous, and a number of phobias compound his situation, such as his fear of germs. Monk has 312 fears, some of which are milk, ladybugs, harmonicas, heights, imperfection, and risk.

I've just bought Monk Seasons 1-6 [DVD]. I would totally reccomend it, at such a ridiculously low price, it will keep you entertained for hours. Again it is the same kind of premise, a detective who is a little bit strange and solves cases other people would never be able to. I really dig this style of television series.

Bones

The show began in the year 2005, and tells the story of a series of case files, solved by an unlikely alliance between Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan's (Emily Deschanel) forensic anthropology team at the Jeffersonian Institution (a thinly veiled allusion to the Smithsonian Institution) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). By examining the human remains of the murder victims, Dr. Brennan and her team provide scientific expertise and an outsider's perspective to the world of criminal investigation to the FBI. In addition to the murder cases featured in each episode, the series explores the backgrounds and relationships of the major characters including the developing friendship and possibly romantic relationship between Brennan and Booth. The series has comedic undertones.

Again with about 24 episodes each this is an incredible deal and the storylines just get better and better throughout the series' as the characters get devoloped: Bones - Season 1-3 - Complete [DVD] [2005]

I have decided to take on the mammoth task of learning a new language.

And not just an easy one for a westener. I decided to learn Mandarin.

I have also set up an accompanying blog here, I aim it to become a community based site which will have a whole range of topics included and a wealth of information.

Its been a wihle since i have posted.

Again.

I have a serious problem with wasting my time.

Often its computer games, sometimes it is films, and new TV series. Sometimes it is chasing things that arent out of reach, but persauding others that a university student can do a competent job is proving hard.

My housemate an I have been trying to become a little more serious about our company. And in the coming times i do hope to post a little more about this, SEO and web design marketing company.

Our first client has proved very useful in terms of experimenting. And we can't wait to unveil their new site and branding. Hoping when the site goes live next week, that it hits the top of the google searchs as hoped.

Anyway, for now, no silly projects, and I realised today I traiped round London tubes in the evening there is yet another project that was started with enthusiasm, but so little conviction as yet. The summer proives to decide whether i can make something of myself. Finish this project as well as starting to pick up my business.

More to come soon. I Promise.

I ended up editing this in a rush yesterday from about 1000 seperate images for Charlotte.

"After being given an open brief at university, I had the idea of getting 10 people to give me a word each, all of which I would have to include in the story. These would pop up as images after the words. Which is why not all of them that could, have images. I wanted to make an animation and scripted it to be very childish and raw. I think it came out pretty well for a first ever film and animation! POKE!"

Sadly i don't get a credit, but thought I'd post it here so you guys can see that I'm not just slacking.

It took a ridiculously long time, and because the computer slowed right up, was finding it very hard to sync the coutdown, so it is quite out, and doesnt flow.

I'm sure Scott (and others) will have a go and start trying to sell me a mac. Go away, I'm not interested in the slightest. I like my shitty Windows Vista, It has personality.

I have been trying for hours to sort this out, and it seems to have worked, although the sheer amount of pictures means i may have to sneakily set up another account or two to put all the pictures in such slideshows.

Which i think is an awesome way of seeing the photos. Please tell me if you disagree?

Alphabet Soup 2.0 : HALFWAY HOUSE

Okay...

So we have reached Halfway (or thereabouts) and I'm afraid i am away the whole day (wheather now permitting) tomorrow, therefore the updates will be slower than you may have grown accustomed to.

However as i am attempting to break a world record (again if the weather permits, its now looking less likely) that it will be forgiven. I will be attempting to go to each London Underground station in a day, and hopefully in time to break the record. I am very excited by this, and will be 270 Tube stations of nothing but thinking about how i might be written about in books. Well... A book. EXCITING.

I thought I would post my personal favourites thus far, but flickr died on me, so alas i cant. I am also trialing an idea for a slideshow for these pictures... Lets see how it goes.

Today's picture wasnt going to be this at all, but in a bout of laziness, something uniquely amazing happened today. From an interesting angled shot, cancelling out the backlight I got the picture of the lightbulb I wanted. But when uploaded, I noticed much to my surprise there was a ladybird in the shot. It just has so much appeal, that i didnt go off and find a 'better' picture.

Alphabet Soup 2.0 : A is for Anticipation

Today is the start of my new project (or rather the second leg of my project), collecting people's interpratations of the alphabet and the world around them. Every day for the next 26 I and the other people involved will take pictures of something representing the letter of the Alphabet in that order.

I blogged about the last time I did this Alphabet Challenge, and you can read the story and see the pictures. I am highly anticipating great things from all you guys out there, I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Decisions...

Today is my housemates 21st Birthday, and the start of February's Alphabet Soup Challenge. It is likely to be a rather messy evening. So I will take my picture and upload it early all going well.

Tomorrow I plan to be in London to join in the Chinese New Year festivities in Leicester Square and China Town. It should be incredible. Then there is a quick meeting about a brand new exciting project that will be happening soon in a pub, before heading to Camden for a gig.

Then in a couple of weeks two of my favourite bands are playing in one of the bigger London club venues (Matter) but I may instead be going to try and break a World record instead. (I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED) But it's a hard decision. I think I will go along and try to help and break the record we are going for. But should it look like it is going to fail, I may bail and go to the gig and rescue the day.

And I totally recommend both them to all of you. Shy Child will be making their first UK Appearance in quite some time. Should be good, though as I say not sure if I will go or not yet. As there are records to be broken.

Apostrophes Abandoned?

I read this article today [Edit i have re-linked, as they seem to have pulled the original article]. If you can't be bothered to read the article, it's basically about a local council having gotten fed up of complaints about grammar on their signs are now getting rid of all apostrophes from future city signs.

It is ridiculous for two reasons. Firstly, it is annoying that a council would give in like this to a little bit of moaning about grammar.

Secondly, one commentator said decision was "absolute defeatism" by the council. That said the commentator was John Richards; who is the proud founder of the Apostrophe Protection Society.

What?!!!

Hold on now, there are times when bad grammar does annoy me. But HE SET UP A WHAT???

An Apostrophe Protection Society! How much time does this ex-journalist John have? I did a little research and was horrified to find this...

Who spends their time (except me now) not just reviewing the punctuation of various ways of saying the same thing in such depth, but upholding the correct way of doing so. And a militant apostrophe protect... Bloody hell. I'm so shocked; I just can't quite get my head round it all.

At least if you’re going to get militant, get militant about something vaguely important, the World is full of good causes. (Although i can't picture them realistically chasing after Birmingham council with guns.)

This John Richards says, that this is teaching the young people in Birmingham the wrong things about punctuation. I think though, that young people may well start graffiti'ing [sic] the missing apostrophes back in.

I wonder whether the council will remove them again. Thankfully, (MAPS) are now seemingly defunct, which at least in my mind means they have found a better cause. Also with further research it seems that http://www.apostrophe.fsnet.co.uk/ the old APS website is also now dead. Which may well mean I can lay my mind to rest about the troubling obsession about apostrophes.

For the record, the rules about apostrophes are;

To indicate the possessive.
To indicate missing letters.

Now all this has been written down I can stop my thoughts of having to throw things around the room angrily.

On a side note, I found out that John Richards is from Boston in Lincolnshire, which is the same little town as my housemate jack. I think they all might be a little weird from up there.

Songs Stuck In My Head

Today has been a day where I haven't been able to get away from the songs that have embedded themselves in my head. Often i welcome this, as i have no need for an i-pod as i often hum songs along in my mind at will. It only becomes a problem when i try to hum out loud, or sing them, because I am completely tone deaf. Thus creating discomfort to anyone nearby.

These song have become stuck in my head, and since my hard drive and my music collection died the other day, i have been stuck playing the few CDs i have with me at uni. And getting bored of generic repetitive music.

Charlie's February Alphabet Challenge : Tips & Help

The time is drawing close for the February Alphabet challenge to roll out, and if recent interest is anything to go by, there should be a fair few of us embarking on this project. Please don't be afraid to invite more people to join now, everyone is welcome.

This also serves as a reminder that it all starts on Saturday, Look for your 'A' and send it in to my blog on the 1st, as you hunt out your next letter. Either send me a link, or email me your picture so I can include it on the blog. I will try to link back to your blogs and give you full credits, whilst you can all vote your favourites for each day.

I thought I would give a couple of pointers and bits of advice in preparation of said challenge. At first when I did it last, it was a bit of a joke between housemates, and we started lazily. However as it went on, I got much more into it.

The key is preparation, or having a half idea of what you may want to snap. If you don't you will end up wandering rather aimlessly round your house looking for anything that begins with a 'D', a 'J' or a 'P'. Now when I did it, I tried to stay away from the usual things depicted on Alphabet sheets, but that was part of my mentality, the days that I wasn't lazy, like 'I' and 'Z'. I had actually gone out and achieved something with my day.

I felt this was great as I wouldn't have gone to a zoo or indeed a bar made out of ice were it not for this challenge.

So if you get stuck look out for:

Cars
Direct Objects
Edibles (Foodstuffs)
Flowers
Games
Household Items
Ideas (Abstract photos, attributed a meaning could work very well, like Jacks B for Broke)

I was going to carry on, but I think you get the idea, without my having to strain for a J. :)

Celebration Day

It was Burns Night last night, it's Australia Day today and the Chinese New Year starts today too.

To celebrate all three, why not find an Australian friend and give them a Chinese burn?

February Alphabet Challenge

Having taken part in what is now a trial run of the Alphabet Challenge, I now want to ask you to join in with me. I took pictures that represented days of the alphabet and changing my status and picture on facebook to coincide with the days.

If you are on Facebook feel free to join the GROUP I made for this plan.

The idea is to re-launch this campaign, which made me really think about the world around me a little more than usual, seeing things you don’t usually see, and also doing things I usually wouldn’t, just to get a good picture for the day. (Although sometimes I didn't get good pictures, and immediately regretted not having done something amazing.)

I want you to take a picture a day, as I did, and for those of you who write blogs with a specific theme, you could keep your theme, and get all your readers enthused with your images and make it a whole project of your own to complete it. For those of you with Facebook, Myspace or Twitter, i think it would be great if you would change your picture and status daily to said pictures and what you have pictured.

So it starts on February 1st, all this involves is taking a picture of something that begins with the letter of that day, Feb 1st - A, 2nd - B, 3rd - C.. Etc. All you need to do is upload this photo and change your status. (For those bloggers out there, just keep to your theme, and send in pictures.)

I see this as a bit of a project in that, it will be interesting to see what many different people come up with, and I would like to collect the best of them from all over the world, plus the added bonus of it probably confusing your friends amuses me slightly.

Like that of a flashmob, except over a month.

So please join me in February, by confusing social networking sites, and invite your friends to do the same, the competition will spur you on to greatness.

London Underground Challenge

So here starts my quest to visit every underground station on the London 'Tube' Network. I have now also thought of a way to keep track of it, visually, that isn’t in spreadsheet form so that I can make it available for your prying eyes.

It will also replicate the copy in my diary, which I am keeping, in as much that I’m scribbling out stations I've done.

I decided to make it slightly harder, than just be pictured at every station. As I could just hop on and off at each station, and that is easy for anyone with too much time on their hands, to do.

So, I am going to have my picture taken outside each station, as well as on the platforms. And should I think something interesting enough, I may take a picture, or tell you about it too.

I was taking information from this site until I realised that a station I went to in my first lot of stations actually isn't on the site at all. Sloane Square* is somehow missing, and I couldn't find any contact details to tell them about their glaring omission, so I now may have to [in time, and please don't hold me to this] put together my own site, which would be much more useful should you want to go to Sloane Square.

That site said there are 280 Tube sites, and I know there is at least one more, because I've been there. Whilst Wikipedia, say there are 268 tube stations, although I think they are not including the DLR, which I think I shall attempt to include, which Wikipedia cite as having 40 Stations, which may put the total number above 300. At some point I may just sit and count all the station, as for some unknown reason there doesn’t seem to be a definite number.

*(They may well have missed more, but I am sure I will get to those as I get further on with this project.)

So here starts the start of this project. Photos of me, inside, and outside (to prove I hadn’t just walked there, or hopped on and off trains) each and every tube station in London. With an occasional insight, and maybe some light trivia as we go.

Yet as i write this, i have actually just found out, this man here has not only already visited all the stations (he claims there is 275) but he has done it in a day. Which is pretty inspired.

Coin Sets : Now I am 21.

Now I am 21, and this project seems to me like a juvenile quest whilst simaltaneously being a project of an old person. There is part of me that just wants to finish it so i can stop 'collecting coins', which all started back there.

For my Birthday my Friend, Adsy gave me one of the few remaining coins i had left on my 'wish list'.

New Agent Provocateur Ad.

Today I shall leave you with this Agent Provocateur advert, which is a bit more than risqué, but is very funny, despite the fact I actually disagree with the final tagline for several reasons.

I don’t like the emphasis on Valentine’s day, as I think it undermines being loving and caring the rest of the year. The final moment of the dance, where she punches him also carries a worrying tone about domestic violence. But I would still maintain that it is a great Ad nonetheless.

London Underground : Sloane Square

So far as i can tell, the only reason to get off here is this fountain.

Sadly these two girls (Rosii & Jenni) don't come with it, but they did escort me round London all day.

The Station Entrance is a little less grand, and looks a little grubby, even at night.

Cool platform wall colour though.

London Underground : Southwark

Southwark

Close to the Tate, and the Globe Theatre. Though confusingly doesn't serve Southwark, which lay to the West and is served by Bourough tube station.

Even the handrails are branded with the London Underground insignia.

A wonderful station with a great design, it was opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee extention.

This building is opposite as you exit the station. I think it is a fantastic structure.
